Glenda Korella | Artistic Director and Conductor, ARCT, BEd, MA

gDirector of the Peninsula Singers since spring of 2001, Korella received her Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto’s ARCT Piano Performance certificate while she was still in high school. In her role with the Chorus, she chooses the music, guest artists, musical accompanists, costumes and choreography. Korella has taught history and choral music to junior high school students and has directed a 200-voice glee club in Calgary, where the group sang in many festivals and concerts.  She continues to teach piano and voice to children and adults in the Sidney area as well as singing in the Via Choralis chamber choir.

“Watching Glenda Korella conduct is such a joy”

Chelsea Fern | Flutist

gOriginally Chelsea wanted to be a violinist, but that was before she heard a young flutist at the Duncan Folk Festival ten years ago and changed her mind. Instead of a violin her parents bought her a soprano silver flute. Since then, she has been busy taking home awards and honours. From age 10 Chelsea has performed at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and along the way been named the Festival’s “most promising student” in the junior and intermediate woodwind finals. Twice the Festival selected her in those categories as the Greater Victoria area’s representative in the provincial competitions. At the Victoria Conservatory of Music she studies under Mary Byrne, where she’s received the highest marks in Grades 9 and 10 VCM examinations. At the Conservatory she’s also taken master classes with leading flutists, including the University of Toronto’s Susan Hoeppner. And like several “Young Artists” chosen to perform with the Peninsula Singers, Chelsea has participated in the Collegium Programme for promising students at VCM. Now 18, Chelsea lives with her parents in Saanichton and is completing her Grade 12 education at home. She plans on a career in music.

Matthew Poon | Accompanist

mpMatthew started playing the piano when he was very young---just four and a half years old. Now a fourth-year music student at the University of Victoria, he is majoring in Piano Performance. Over the course of his young career, Matthew has won numerous awards, including: the Dave Paulson Award in 2007at the Victoria Performing Arts Festival, the Dr. Robin Wood Memorial Cup at the Festival in '06 and the Nathan Geminiano Memorial Cup at the Festival in 2000. The Victoria Conservatory has twice awarded Matthew with the highest mark in piano examinations: in Grade 10 and Grade 11. He has studied piano with a number of leading teaching in the Victoria area including Dr. Robin Wood. Matthew enjoys graphic design, drawing and volunteering with young children. He plans to continue his musical studies either in Canada or abroad.

The Peninsula Singers | Chorus

psWe are an eclectic group. Many of us have moved here from all parts of Canada, particularly Ontario; and from the Netherlands, Germany, England, Scotland and the United States. Several of us are: physicians, including one public health physician with the Canadian Forces. We are nurses, LPN’s, teachers, and former school principals. Our ranks include: an oceanographer; research scientist with Fisheries & Oceans; professor in the UVic Faculty of Education; chartered accountant; several authors and editors; bookkeeper; owner of a marina; banker; certified organic farmer; fitness instructor; alarm system technician; a former jazz singer from Montreal, a piano teacher; and one self-styled “domestic goddess.” We are parents and grandparents. We volunteer throughout this region, including at the Marine Museum; the YM and YWCA; and with new immigrants and refugees. We ride dirt bikes; paint; throw pots; garden; try our hand at English rugby; are master knitters; play the piano and washtub bass. And collectively we are the lucky companions to many dogs and cats.
